I believe the contrary is true and the results of these battles organized by Biggy will indicate this, me thinks. The fleet strength for combat will depend upon the AMOUNT of resources spent coupled by a sufficient FODDER screen backed up by enough HEAVY HITTERS. Because of a multiplier of 2 for mineral compared to a mutiplier of 1 for metal, those combat fleets which are heavy on metal(fighters, frigates, cruisers) will likely have the edge over those heavy on mineral(destroyers, bombers, bts) presuming that the scores of both fleets are equal. There is also random targetting involved in deciding the outcome of battle. Try using a fleet against another fleet having the exact same composition and the results of battle will be different everytime. If there is no random, then all those 100,040,000 fleets will kill each another equally. There will be no winners or losers. So, how does random targetting work? I believe Scan/Zedd has incorporated different ship stats to the respective ships. Every ship has been accorded a 'hit and soak' (attack and defence percentages/points) value and every battle is based upon probability, ie. the roll of a dice or two. Think of the boardgame 'RISK' and how battle is decided and you'll have a general idea on how the principles work. It's all about the number of hits generated by the ships and the probability of the hits landing on target and the probability of the target able to soak up the 'hit' or not. Also imagine that dices need not be six sided but 100 or 1000 sided depending on the ship stats. I doubt that S/Z will release the ship stats but if they do, it will help many players understand how combat is decided, thus making it clear why the smaller/weaker ships or fleets get killed first. The only statistic that is obvious is that the opvs, inva ships and cargo ships have zero attack points and some defense points thus enabling them to survive small attacks. Well, many people may think all this is bull-**** and they will have their own ideas on combat and fleet composition. They might even be totally right but for those who love to play war/strategy games like I do, I hope this post will help shed some light into some of the myths and mysteries of how DG combat works. Btw...Gollum, yes the fighters are really expensive but hell they are worth it for equal fights. zees67 your theory might be correct of not but what does it interest in the real game?
In the real game people don't say "i have to make a 100M fleet, what is the best combo"? People don't have score to spend making a fleet, people have RESOURCES to spend. The price of a fleet is not established in score but on resources. Who cares if a fleet heavy on metal is cheaper because it has less score? That only maters in set battles like this where there is a score limit for the fleet size. In the real game what matters is how much resources are in a each fleet not it's score.
